Consequences
“Your time is up, choose now.” The German told me with a ridiculous accent. “Come, on; you don’t need this, we can run away together.” She whispered quietly in my ear. “But if we run away, those guys will be looking for us. I’m sorry, but I can’t live like that. “I can’t bear being around those Germans.” “I’m not leaving you here.” “Yes, you are. If you stay, they’ll get both of us and then all of that time you spent running would have been for nothing. Now go, before the German changes his mind.” She told me. As we were leaving, I said, “Goodbye, I’ll never forget you.” The Officer then gave the pilot an order and he flew us out of there. “By the time the allied forces reach that bunker, we’ll be long gone. Consider yourself a lucky man; you’re getting a fresh start. But that’s only going to happen if you forget about your old life.” “That girl is all that’s left of my past “Look, I have no idea what you are going through, but I’m sorry. Things happen.” The German told me. “Not like this…all that running, I did it for her; and now she’s gone. I don't even know why I'm doing this; I should have stayed.” I said. “Well you can’t go back now."
One cold winter night in Germany, I dreamt of her; of what our lives could have been if she came to Germany with me. “Come on, get up; your country needs you.” The officer said, as he shook me until I was wide awake. “I stopped working for those Americans years ago.” “Really funny; now get out of bed. The mission involves explosives and a munitions factory.” “What would you do if I refused?” “I would execute you on the spot…just kidding. Come on, do it for me.” “This is the last favor I’m doing for you.”
As I was getting ready to make the jump, I stopped. There was something I had to know, just in case I didn’t make it out alive. “You never told how you learned to speak English.” I told the officer. “My dad was an American; he taught me English when I was six. Now go, before you miss the spot.” I then backed up a bit, and hopped out of the plane. “Can’t see a thing through the fog; this sucks.” I complained. After parachuted down, and making a bad landing because of the horrible visibility, the result was a broken leg. “Yeah, walking will definitely be a pain.” I told myself. I heard sirens going off and a large amount footsteps heading in my general direction. “This really isn’t my day.
“Sergeant Riley, or should I say Former Sergeant Riley; you’re under arrest for numerous acts of treason. You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney; if you do not have one, one will be given to you.”I heard the MP Officer ramble on. “Yeah, yeah; I know the drill. Take me away already.” Then, I felt the wind blow past my shoulder as two shots wounded the Officer, and were enough to distract the infantrymen.
“Sniper, everyone hit the deck!” The Officer in charge ducked down, so I threw an uppercut, catching him off guard. Then, I kicked the MP Officer in the stomach and punched him square in the face. However, the MP Officer wasn’t giving up yet; he started his counterattack with a painful left hook to my jaw, an equally powerful blow to my stomach and a strong kick to my injured leg. I fell to the floor, screaming in agonizing pain. I was barely able to bring myself onto my knees, at which point the MP Officer bashed the side of my head with a lead baton. “Cuff ‘m, before he gets anymore smart ideas.” I heard the MP Officer say. “Sorry, misfire.” “Keep your trigger happy rookie in check, corporal.” The MP Officer said. Blood was dripping down my face and mouth and my jaw was almost broken. A heavily built man slowly made his advance towards me, holding a pair of handcuffs in his right hand. My entire body ached and I had trouble breathing after the blow to my stomach. That’s when the adrenaline kicked in. The pain went away and my mind was racing; until, I finally thought of an idea. Using his weight against him, I tripped the man and limped as fast as I could to the nearest snow hill. Unfortunately, the guy I tripped was carrying a sidearm. Although he was a horrible shot, which I noticed as he missed me seven times, the last bullet hit me in the leg and caused me to trip over myself. Yet again, I screamed into the cold winter night, only to hear my voice echoing through the plain. Not only did I not account for the man to be carrying a sidearm, but I also forgot about the squad of infantry. The plan was doomed to fail. I heard the MP Officer screaming at the guy for missing and sent four guys this time, armed with Thompson submachine guns.
One second, four medium-built men were walking towards me, and the next they were laying dead next to me. Axis tanks coming in from all sides and an overwhelming amount of German troops surrounded the area. I watched them, screaming at the American troops as if they understood. “We need support; we're surrounded”, I heard the MP Officer scream into the radio. My superior got to me as fast as he could with several medics. “Is all this for me; do you really care about me that much?” “It’s the least I could do.” Let’s get you out of here.” The medics loaded me onto a stretcher and carried me to a plane. When we finally reached the plane, I practically jumped at the sound of a gun being cocked.
“Put your hands in the air where I can see them; all of you.” “What are you doing here, I thought you were arrested.” She showed me a badge. “Olivia Brunson, Secret Service.”, she told me. “What the heck; this is definitely not my day. First I injure my leg on the way down, I almost die after being surrounded by American troops, and now this! How did you guys find me anyway?” “Remember the bunker; the last time I saw you?” She asked. “Yeah, and?” “The letters you sent me, they listed your address. We ended up smuggling a spy into the country, which pinpointed your exact location and informed us on your whereabouts.” “What letters; I thought I told you to forget about her?” “When you were a spy, did you forget about your wife?” The helicopter was dead silent. “What’s the matter, cat got your tongue?” I joked. “Oh, shut up; if not for you, we wouldn’t be in this mess” My superior said. “Hey, um… did you forget about me; girl with a gun pointed at your face?” “You know that’s pretty funny but I’ve got a question for you.” “What’s that?” Olivia asked. “How do you plan to get out of here alive?” She didn’t say a word. All I could hear was the yelling of the German troops as they rounded up the remainder of the American soldiers. “Didn’t think about that one did you?” I asked rhetorically. "Congrats; you win, for now. Soon enough we'll find you, and throw your ass in prison.” I saw her turn and begin walking away. Then she stopped and turned back with her sidearm pointed at me. “I almost forgot; don’t drop the soap.” Those few seconds were the longest I’ve ever endured in my life. Time slowed down; I saw gunfire coming from the eighth story window of the ruins of a nearby building. A single bullet flew through the air and shot her right through the head. Blood and brain matter was all over the place. The pilot was in shock, and an eerie silence filled the plane. "Why…why did he have to kill her?” The pilot said, swallowing his tears.
Several years later, I got caught in the crossfire during a battle with some American troops. After tossing me into a POW camp, they reconsidered my punishment. The U.S. Army charged me with desertion, aiding the enemy and espionage; as a result, I was given the death penalty. These being the last few days of my life, I wanted to put all of get my life story out there and my feelings on paper. Ever since I got here, all I dreamt of was the time she and I had together. I regret the fact that she had to die; what we had, it was special. Of all the women I’ve ever been with, she’s the only one I actually fell for. Even now, I find it hard to believe it’s over; sorry I let you down ma.
